" The invisible/imaginary texture of the perceived world is something which emerges from our corporeal immersion with in it, as a manifestation of the multiple possibilities of the real."
- Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Phenomenology of Perception

Inspired by observation of the atmospheric conditions found in the interior of a window greenhouse that is attached to my home and studio. Tightly packed with clear glass objects, temporal fluctuations of light and color become a trace of the everyday and the fleeting nature of experience - where such concerns as distance and proximity, ambiguity and contradiction, matter and its negation, invite speculation about illusion and reality.

The paintings are both “pictures” of space and they inhabit space as objects. Phenomena gleaned from the material and virtual world create an internal structure that is both subterranean and architectural. A geography is presented as fields of vision coalesce and separate, while evoking both familiar and other worldly connections to experience.

Drawing is a way for me to engage the physical act of making through repetition, focused concentration and an elevated awareness of the sense of touch. Whether observing natural phenomena or quoting form derived from the surrounding cultural milieu, my process is improvisational - punctuated with moments of negotiation that take place between impulse/restraint, compression/expansion, and representation/abstraction. A drawing is succeeding for me when it teeters on the edge of abstraction yet grounds vision in the familiar, and when the familiar is disrupted, thereby creating a chance to heighten the act of perceiving.
